Our Beach Study Year 4 Rhiwbeina Primary School

Our year 4 classes have been to Rhoose Beach, which is about20 km form our school to carry out a beach study. We wanted to see hown much litter there was on the beach and to clear it up. We took water samples back to school to measure how polluted it was. The water around our coast is much cleaner than it used to be.

WHY SAVE WATER?

Water means life. We can’t live more than 72 hours without water. Animals and plants can’t live without water too.
In our Planet, 97% of all the water is salt water and only 1% can be used by people. The other 2% is frozen water and we can’t drink it.
Today we must save this precious resource because the demand of water is increasing every year. In fact, the growing population in our Planet needs more and more water. The global warming is reducing our water supplies too.
So it is very important that we use water wisely and not waste it.
Remember: when we save water, we also save energy and money!
Saving water is not a hard thing. Simple things like turning the tap off while you brush your teeth or spending less time in the shower help reduce water wastage.
We must do our part in saving water for future generations and it is our responsibility to learn more about it.

RECYCLING

Recycling is important in today’s world if we want to leave this planet to our future generations. It is good for the environment, since we are making new products from the old ones which are useless to us. Recycling begins at home!
Recycling is a process that consist in changing garbage into new products: it reduces the consumption of fresh materials, reduces energy usage, reduces air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling), and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the “Reduce. Reuse and Recycle” waste hierarchy.
Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles and electronics. Although similar in effect, the composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste – such as food or garden waste – is considered recycling.
In the strictest sense, recycling of a material would produce a fresh supply of the same material – for example, used office paper would be converted into new office paper, or used foamed polystyrene into new polystyrene.
Recycling of many products or materials can involve their reuse in producing different materials instead. Another form of recycling is the salvage of certain materials from complex products, either due to their intrinsic value, or to their hazardous nature.
Critics dispute the net economic and environmental benefits of recycling over its costs, and suggest that proponents of recycling often make matters worse and suffer from confirmation bias.

1° I.C. "D.DOLCI" PRIOLO GARGALLO- "Flowers, flowers and flowers ..... coming out from polluting plastic bottles"

What is considered a garbage by all, it has been a treasure for us. In fact, we have given “life” to abandoned bottles and turn them into something new. Christmas decorations!
